Fairfax City, named after Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century when farmers from Virginia’s Tidewater region first settled the area. Officially established as the Town of Fairfax in 1874 and becoming an independent city in 1961, Fairfax City has grown while retaining its historical charm, including landmarks like the old trolley line built in 1904 connecting it to Washington, D.C.
